Klezmer Juice, led by Buenos Aires-born Gustavo Bulgach, joins visiting Brazilian singer Nicole Borger for a night of Yiddish Bossa Nova, Brazilian klezmer, tangos, nigunim, bulgars and freilachs. Der Nister, the downtown LA cultural center and synagogue 14 stories up on historic 7th and Spring, is host to this special concert.
About Gustavo Bulgach: While remaining true to klezmer’s Eastern European Jewish roots, Bulgach’s Latin background and hipster credentials (featured in the movie Wedding Crashers and as a founder member of the House of Blues house band) have also led to a busy career performing with other internationally acclaimed acts.
About Nicole Borger: She appears at Jewish musical festivals around the world — and started one, Kleztival, in Sao Paulo with her husband, Edy, and Klezmatics trumpeter Frank London. Borger created an album called Raízes , which bridges America, Brazil and Yiddishkeit in Borger's choices of repertoire and arrangements, turning traditional and contemporary Jewish songs such as “Yidl Mitn Fidl,” “Abi Gezunt,” “Bulbes” or “S’Iz Nito Kein Nekhtn” into Brazilian bossa novas, baiaos and frevos.
This concert is happening on DTLA's Art Walk night, so be advised that it will be easier to find parking around Hill or Olive should you drive here. Go to the front door, next to the LA Cafe, and you will be let in; if not, dial Der Nister on the callbox. Go to the 14th floor up the elevator.
Tickets: $25
